Historical sites & field trips Hopefully, your study abroad in Greece program will offer significant opportunities to supplement your study with excursions and field trips to the many historical sites of the Eastern Mediterranean. Of all of the artwork the student may come across in the many Classical sites of Greece, probably the hand-painted or etched work of pottery is the most outstanding. For example, on some of the great Minoan vases and palace walls appear the Cretan’s favorite animal, the octopus. |
 |
| The octopus reflects his obvious love of the sea, and its dynamic twining tentacles are often depicted with great feeling for their ornamental possibilities and a great understanding of the particular nature of this wonderful creature. One can also see in the great narrative painting on vases and frescos, varied dramatic scenes from the murder of Penthesilea by Achilles to the more playful game of bull-jumping so beautifully rendered in the Palace of Knossos on Crete. One of the things that students have told us they enjoy most is visiting the archaeological diggings on Santorini, uncovering the ancient city of Atlantis at Akrotiri. But, as with Santorini, Ancient Olympia, Mt. Olympus, the Acropolis, the marble quarries of Paros and Naxos, the Temple of Poseidon at Cape Sounion, or the incredible ruins at Delos at Delphi, the places themselves are a living museum to be accessed as you wander in awe of the Natural world into which you have stepped. |
